Events

Large events concentrate people in open space, with limited exits and a long wait for help. Security can be tight and still miss someone who is determined to cause harm.

The Boston Marathon bombing on April 15, 2013, is the case most people remember. Two attackers set off two bombs near the finish line, killing 3 people and injuring more than 260. Active shooter attacks at gatherings follow the same problem. In the FBI’s 2000–2019 review, 50 incidents were in open spaces. The highest casualty count in the FBI series was the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017: 58 killed and 489 wounded. Open space remained a leading location after that, with 10 incidents in 2020, 19 in 2021, and 23 in 2022.

Bridge of Life Training’s Bystander Active Shooter Education (B.A.S.E.) course applies battlefield casualty care to that setting. It teaches what to do in the first minutes, and how to keep injured people alive until medical personnel take over, when one event can produce many casualties at once.
