Houses of worship are not off limits. Many congregations now have an active shooter plan, and some have security. Neither one puts care at the point of injury. People still die in the minutes before help arrives.
From 2000 through 2019, the FBI designated 15 active shooter incidents in houses of worship. Through 2018, that category accounted for 71 killed and 60 wounded. The FBI recorded none in 2020, one in 2021, and two in 2022. The First Baptist Church attack in Sutherland Springs, Texas, on November 5, 2017, is already inside those figures: 26 people were killed and 22 were wounded. It is the deadliest shooting at an American house of worship.
